Week 11: Michelle Obama

The December 1, 2008 issue of Newsweek had an interesting article on Michelle Obama. The article touched mostly on the image of Mrs. Obama and the stereotypes that African American women face. Obama has had a lot of experience living like a white woman, but she still knows who she is and where she came from. Michelle still thinks of herself as the little black girl from the South Side of Chicago.
At the age of 44, she will be the youngest First Lady since Jacquline Kennedy, who still remains to be a fashion icon. During the campaign, Michelle Obama pulled out her Jackie O. pearls to appear less like a strong, loud black woman. During this historical moment, all eyes will be on Michelle from the type of work she will do to the outfits she decides to wear. If you get a chance, check out the article.

I really admire Michelle Obama and think she is going to have a huge influence on women in the upcoming years. It is extremely important that she recognizes the icon she will become and does it justice. She carries herself with much pride and grace and I feel she a positive role model for young girls as she is a strong confident woman. Just being strong and confident is not enough however. SHe has been blessed with the opportunity to make a huge difference and really have a voice and she should use this for good. She needs to lead by example whether it be programs she implements, speaches she gives, her role as a wife and mother, and yes, even the clothes she wears and how she carries herself.

I look forward to what kind of influence Michelle Obama will leave on our nation because without a doubt there will be one. She may take after Jackie O. and be another fashion icon or she may just be looked at for her leadership and strong will but only time will tell. Michelle is a very intelligent and strong woman and I think she is going to do great things for our country.

I also truly admire Michelle Obama. I believe that she will be a good influence within the country because she is a strong woman. The past comments made about her in the media frustrated me because of their focus on her as a black woman with certain stereotypes attached to her image. It is sad that they chose to focus on this aspect of her person instead of her ability to make a difference in the lives of not only black women, but all women. I believe that she will be a driving force for change, and not just as a fashion icon.

As an African-american male it's great to see an African-American female in such a powerful role. Michelle Obama will be a great role model for all races. From the way she carries herself to the way she appears to run her household. I feel she is a great person and women should strive to be like her.
